The name Lakmé comes from the french opera that's the french version for the indian goddess Lakshmi whom stands for prosperity and beauty. Lakmé was founded in 1952 and became famous when the then Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehry, was concerned that the indian women used precious foreign currency to shop for beauty products. He then personally asked that products should be made in India. Today the indian market is open for competition from multi national beauty companies, but Lakmé keeps a special place in indian women's hearts.
